Our journey this time will take us from the industrial city of Clermont Ferrand, out into the wilderness of the Massif Central. Our only bookings are the trains out, and trains home again from Toulouse 12 days later. It has to be Toulouse because only the TGV's on the western side of France have bike spaces. No more dismantling bikes, we are getting too old to carry them!

Saturday
After a cold night came a cold morning. Lots of coffee. Coffee to get started, more coffee at Besse. Saw the steep climb to Super Besse and were relived to find our road was flatter. Stopped at picnic spot with benches to fry up some fillet steak for lunch- yum! Arrived at our destination Condat, spent ages dithering about in the supermarket because they didn't sell blankets, took at look at the campsite and decided it was too grim to spend a cold evening at. Another 500m of climb bought us to Cheylade, booked a hotel at €55. Hopefully warm tonight! Strangest sight of the day? A man with a rake ushering a snake to the side of the road while a boy in a cycle helmet watched him.
